Many of the best screen savers on the Web are of the shareware and commercial variety. However, there are a number of outstanding FREE screen savers out there that are as good as, or better, than commercial programs.
It is our goal here at The Free Site to bring you a current listing of what we believe are the best free screen savers and screen saver utilities around. Send us E-mail if you're aware of any such free screen savers that we haven't listed below and we'll consider them for a listing.

Star Trek Screen Saver - Here's a quality freeware screen saver that features floating images of the crew members from Star Trek: The Next Generation. 1.23 megabytes. (For Windows 95/98/NT).
"You've Got Mail" screen saver - This free screen saver features images and quotes from the new movie, "You've Got Mail," which tells the story of a couple's E-mail romance. A Warner Bros. production, "You've Got Mail" stars Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks and opens Dec. 18. This site also features free desktop patterns and icons inspired by the movie. For Windows and Macs.
Drawing Hand Screen Saver - This jaw-dropping free screen saver is one of the most impressive that we've seen yet. It features a moving artist's hand that creates incredible works of art right before your eyes. It's difficult to take your eyes off this amazing creation. Image Saver - Make your own screen saver with this nifty free utility. Image Saver lets you easily display your own collection of images as a screen saver. Works with JPG, BMP and WMF files, among others. Highly configurable and lets you set "hotspot" corners to instantly activate the screensaver or prevent it from launching. (For Win 95/98). 300 kilobytes.
Underwater photos screen savers - Blue Oasis online diving magazine is offering free screen savers that feature lovely, colorful underwater images by Gunther Deichmann and other noted photographers. Desktop wallpaper images are also available. (For Windows 95/98).
Anna Kournikova Screen Saver - Here's a free screen saver featuring images of the dazzling rising star of the tennis world. A must for Anna fans.
(For Windows 95/98/NT.) 1.19 megabytes. A Pentium with 16 megabytes of RAM is recommended; with a display set to 16 bit color or better.
Starflight Screen Saver - Cool "flying through space" screen saver from Germany that features many options, including spectral coloring of stars and two separate configurable star sets for better 3D effect. For Windows 95 and NT. Author Matthias Huebner recently updated this screen saver and it now includes a number of refinements. The new version is smaller and is available in English & German.
Christmas Snowflake Screen Saver - MHDA Inc., makers of the excellent Christmas Snowflake E-Storybook offer a lovely, free Christmas screen saver at this site. You can also download a free demo of the Christmas E-Storybook here. (For Windows 95/98. 1.1 megabytes).
The Free Site Screen Saver - Version 3 of The Free Site's own screen saver has been released. This new & improved screen saver features additional colorful images of landmarks from around the world, as well as lovely nature scenes. Claudia Schiffer Screen Saver - (Direct download: 756 kilobytes, for Windows) This free screen saver features 20 images of the German supermodel, along with transition effects.
Harley-Davidson Screen Saver - This free screen saver commemorates the motorcycle maker's 95th anniversary. Jeez, I didn't even know they had motorcycles back in 1903! Features plenty of neat Harley images and cool motorcycle engine sounds. For Windows 95, 3.1 and NT.
Biblical Verses Screen Saver - Here's a nice free screen saver that displays 10 beautiful photos with verses from the Bible and plays Christian music in the background. Here's a screen shot. There are other Christian-themed screen savers here, including "Christian Themes" and "Jesus Bridges the Gap." For Windows 95/NT.
Light Speed - An eye-catching free screen saver, Light Speed serves up infinite variations of starscapes and offers wonderful animations and sounds. It offers an engine that displays up to 6,000 stars on the screen at the same time. It sure beats Microsoft's lame "Flying Through Space" screen saver that comes with Win 95!
Another Countdown Screen Saver - Count down the minutes to the Millennium (or any other event you'd like) with this free screen saver, which sports a cool LED display.
Elvis Presley Screen Saver - Direct download: 850 kilobytes. For Windows 95/98/NT. Remember The King with this nifty free screen saver, which features 20 images of Elvis the Pelvis, complete with transition effects.
Corkboard - This wonderful free program offers a versatile screen saver that does everything but take out your garbage. It's like a bulletin board for your computer, onto which you can place any one of a number of cool "objects," such as a clock, a calendar, memo pads, graphics, various gizmos, pranks and much more. Johnny Castaway Screen Saver - (Direct download: 1.3 megabytes). Old commercial programs never die. They just become freeware! This is a classic screen saver that lets you follow the ongoing adventures (and misadventures) of a sailor marooned on a desert island. It's not the most high-tech screen saver around, but it is endlessly fun to watch. (For Windows 95/98 & 3.1).
Liverdance Screen Saver - This wacky screen saver takes on Celtic culture (specifically, the popular "Riverdance" show). Watch as a squadron of talented Irish livers magically come to life. Watch as inanimate livers suddenly grow eyes and limbs and start to dance to an Irish step-dancing soundtrack. (From the makers of the popular Hey, Macaroni!) For Windows. The Amazing Leonardo DiCaprio Screen Saver - If you're a fan of the star of "Titanic," and "The Man in the Iron Mask," then this free screen saver is a must. Watch as images of the Hollywood superstar float gracefully about your screen, remain centered or appear at different positions. For Win 95.
Bill's Pie Toss Interactive Screen Saver - If you've ever envied the guy who tossed a cream pie into Bill Gates' face, now your chance to do the same. This free screen saver lets you hurl a pie at the world's richest geek, as he sticks his head through circular cut-outs in a "pie-board" or rides by on a tricycle. Features a carnival-like atmosphere and an "Interactive Mode" that allows you to control the pie action. There's also a commercial version that removes the ads and features an extra scene. Garfield Screen Saver - This site offers several funny screen savers featuring the famous plump feline. The "Midnight Snack" screen saver is our favorite and shows the big guy waking up in the middle of the night to raid the fridge. (For Macs and PCs).
Art Pet Screen Saver (demo) - View "artistic interpretations" of your pet with this new screen saver. Here's the deal: you send Art Pets photos of your pet. They'll scan them and digitally manipulate them into artistic interpretations in a variety of styles, and compile the art images into a multimedia screensaver. This demo is fully functional, with only a few limitations. (980K: For Windows)
TraySaver (direct download for Win 95: 7 kilobytes) - Do you have this problem? You want your password-protected screen saver to turn on whenever you're away from your desk, but you don't want your screen saver to come on if you're taking a few minutes to read the information on your screen. TraySaver addresses the need for an
"on-demand" screen saver. TraySaver will add an icon to your taskbar tray. Double-click it and your screen saver comes on. You can also access your screen saver properties quickly by right-clicking. TraySaver's home page is here.
Chicago Bulls Champions Screen Saver - A cool free screen saver that commemorates the Bulls' championship title. Features a nice, floating "Repeat 3 Peat" championship logo. (990K, for Windows)
Animorphs Screen Saver - This clever screen saver morphs people into animals. You can customize the settings to your own preferences for screen blanking and wake-up times, just follow the supplied directions. (For PCs and Macs)
Braun Alarm Clock Screen Saver - This useful screen saver displays a functioning, nicely rendered clock that even has an alarm that you can use, if you have a sound card. For Windows and Macs.
Titanic Screen Saver - This site offers the official screen saver for the hit movie, "Titanic." There's also a "Desktop Dairy" and images for use as desktop wallpaper here. This site is getting so many hits, you may have trouble connecting; just keep trying. For Windows and Macs.
Sherman's Lagoon Screen Saver - This is a fun, free animated screen saver that's a must for fans of the popular comic strip about the undersea adventures of various fish.
Hey, Macaroni - This hilarious, hugely popular free screen saver includes sound and a music track spoofing the popular "Macarena" song and associated dance. Instead, watch elbow macaroni dance and sing. This screen saver has beautiful artwork, 3D rendered macaroni, and more. Available in a free version, as well as a shareware version. For Windows.
Circus Screen Saver - Step right up for this fun, free clown's "Pie in Your Face" screen saver, featuring amusing graphics, from Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey's Web site. For Windows (1.5 megs) and Macs (2.25 megs).
Princess Diana screen saver
- This free screen saver captures the cherished images of the great lady, from her emergence in the public's eye with her engagement to Prince Charles through the fairy tale wedding of the century and the births of her sons. Features an original piano soundtrack. Note: this site is inaccessible at times.
AVI Screen Saver - If you have some AVI, QuickTime, or MPEG files that you want to make into a screen saver, this is the program for you! You'll be able to assemble a play list of movies which will play one after the other and loop as your screen saver. Win 95 only. (By the way, if you don't have any AVI or MPEG clips, then go here for one of the Web's best collections).
Cannabinatic Screen Saver - The Cannabinatic Screen Saver shows interesting looks and facts about a miracle plant known as "Hemp." For Win 95/NT.
XaraCube - Very cool screen saver that places your own images onto rotating blocks that spin and chase each other across your screen. You can create your own version of this screen saver and include whatever images you want, including those lovely sunset photos that you picked up from the Usenet newsgroups!
Random Saver - Can't make up your mind
which screen saver to run from your vast collection? Install this utility as the default screen saver in your Windows Control Panel and it will run your screen savers at random. Nice!
Economist Facts about the World - This is a useful screen saver that allows you to view statistics for 60 of the world�s leading economies, check the time locally and abroad.�Note: you must register with The Economist before you can download. Register, then return to the main page and the screen saver link will be in the lower left corner. (For Windows).
UFO Screen Saver - A clever, eye-catching screen saver that features four different types of popular UFO designs, all rendered photo-realistically, which spin or wobble their way around your screen.
The PointCast Network - PointCast uses "push" technology to give you the latest news, sports, entertainment and much more delivered to your desktop in the form of a clever and innovative screen saver. Great things have been promised for "push," (but most of it has been hype that has failed to materialize). PointCast does a good job, but you'll really need a full-time Net connection to make the most of this program. If you're a Webmaster, then PointCast Connection will allow you to broadcast your own content.
Sky Screen Saver -
Do you take your astronomy seriously? Then check this free screen saver out. The Sky Screen Saver shows the sky above any location on Earth, including stars (from the Yale Bright Star Catalogue of more than 9000 stars to the 7th magnitude), the Moon in its correct phase and position in the sky, and the position of the Sun and all the planets in the sky. Educational!
Booksaver Screen Saver - This free screen saver will automatically download your Web browser bookmarks and then display them as a screen saver. Possible uses include: a customized news screen saver; collect Webcam sites and have a screen saver that includes Webcams from around the world; or just keep up to date on all of your favorite bookmarks.
